Bermuda, October 12, 1998The funeral of the foreign student tragically killed in an Island road accident has taken place in her home town in Germany. Catrin Schafer, 23, was buried on Thursday in Dusseldorf after she became Bermuda's 12th road accident fatality two weeks ago. Buried along with her was a quantity of Bermudian sand. The funeral service was packed with fellow students from the town's Heinrich Heine University where Ms Schafer studied.
Ms Schafer was due to fly back to Germany at the end of September after completing a research placement at the Bermuda Biological Station. But on the eve of her return home her livery cycle was involved in a head on collision with a car on Kindley Field Road, Hamilton Parish.
On Friday, Ms Schafer's university tutor, Prof. Chris Bridges, said: "The funeral for Catrin took place here yesterday with family and many friends and we placed some of Bermuda's sand in the grave with her."
Prof. Bridges went on to say that Ms Schafer's mother had been left devastated by the tragic death of her daughter and many of her student colleagues were struggling to continue with their studies.
